私は、大川塾二期生アラビア語班の加藤健四郎といいます。

そもそも大川塾とは．．．

大川先生が昭和7年の五・一五事件に連座しまして刑務所に幽獄したわけでございますけれども、奥多摩刑務所を仮出所なさって初めてのお仕事が東亜経済調査局附属研究所の設立でございました。東亜経済調査局附属研究所は、大川先生が直接訓育されたものですから、外部の方々は大川塾と呼んでおりました。

My name is Kenshirou Kato, the second term student, belonging to the Arabian language group, of the Okawa school.

To begin with, what is the Okawa school?

Mr. Okawa was implicated in the 5.15 case of 1932 and sent to prison. He established the attached Institute of East-Asia Economic Analysis Bureau as his first task after release on parole from Okutama Prison. Mr. Okawa, himself, taught students in the attached Institute of East-Asia Economic Analysis Bureau and therefore the institute was called the Okawa school by outside people.

大川塾の教えとは．．．

諸君の任務は、一面において各所の綿密なる調査研究をして日本のアジア近隣に貢献すると同時に、他面においては日本人とはこのようなものだということを諸君の日常の行動でアジアの諸民族に知らしめることである。それには第一に諸君は正直でなければならない。正直とは己を欺かず、人を欺かず、天を欺かざることである。第二は親切でなければならない。親切とは誠実と慈悲をもって人に接することである。この二つを行えたならば、諸君は日本人として真面目を発揮し得ること間違いない。そして一人でも二人でも現地の中で本当の友を見つけなさい。そして任地において趣味を見つけてそれを十年間続けることです。ということを大川先生はおっしゃいましたが、東亜経済調査局附属研究所の教育方針はこの訓示の中に要約されていると思います。

What was Mr.Okawa’s guidance?

Mr.Okawa said, ” Your task, on one hand, is to research the areas carefully, to cotribute to the neighboring Asian countries and on the other hand to show the Asian people what the Japanese are by your own daily behavior at the same time. For those purposes, you should be honest. Honesty means that you do not deceive yourselves, people and gods.

Secondly, you should be kind. Kindness means that you contact people with sincerity and mercy. If you carry out those two matters, you can prove yourselves, certainly, to be straight persons. And have true friends in the local people. It is no matter that the number is one or two. Find out your hobby and continue it for ten years where you are stationed.”

I think his principle of education is well-summarized in this guidance.

現地の独立のために働いてこいということを言われたことは全然ない？

はい。それはありません。

Have you been ever told that you endeavor for independence of those countries?

No. Nothing of the sort.

なぜ独立支援という発想に？

大川塾では、先生が海峡概論とかアジア復興の諸問題とか先生自らご講義なされておりますので、そういう教育の中で自然とアジアの独立ということが身についてきたのだと思います。

Then, why has it led you to aid independence?

In the Okawa school, he himself delivered lectures such as Theory of Straight and

Problems of Asian Reconstruction. I think. conceptions of the Asian independence,

therefore, had been acquired in those lectures spontaneously.

外地へ出て、手柄を立てて日本に「帰りたい」という考えは

大川塾の塾生はそういう考えでいた方は一人もいないと思います。

Did you have an idea that you distinguished yourself where you were stationed.

and “wanted to return” to Japan.

I think, there was no one in the Okawa school with such an idea.

お国のために死ね、という教育は？

生きなければ任務を達成できないから、どんなことがあっても死んではならない。カッコ悪くても生きる努力をしなさい。という風に教えられました。

Were you taught that you should die for the nation?

We were taught, “You should not die no matter what happens. If you do not live. you are not able to carry out your duty. Make every effort to live even if it is ill-shaped.”

赴任地はベトナムを希望されたのでしょうか

いえ。それは全部大川先生がお決めになって、赴任先をお決めになりました。

Did hope for stationing in Vietnum?

No. Who stations where is decided by Mr.Okawa.

ベトナムに赴任の思いは

ベトナムに赴任したら、ベトナムの独立のために働いて日本に帰るつもりはありませんでした。昭和16年8月23日です。思い出せば、神戸港を出港したのです。山口県の対馬海峡を船が過ぎると日本がかすかになってくるんです。かすかになった日本を眺めながら髪の毛をザックリ切って、そして長く伸びた爪をきれいに切ってそれを紙に包んで、台北に着いて郵便局に行ってそれを実家に送って、そのあと日本には帰らないつもりで渡航したのです。

What was your feeling at that time?

I would endeavor for the independence of Vietnum after I reached Vietnum and had no intention of returning to Japan. That was August 23,1941. According to my memory, I departed from Kobe port. As the ship passed through the Straight of Tsushima of Yamaguchi Prefecture, I had a faint view of Japan. Viewing the fainting Japan, I cut my hair without hesitation and neatly long nails. In reaching Taipei,I sent those to my parents home via post. I determined myself not to return to Japan and departed.

大川周明の東条英機への進言

大川先生が中国からは一兵も残さず引き上げなさい。それを東条首相に進言をして、そしたら東条首相がそんなことはできないと、靖国神社の英霊に対してすまないからそんなことはできない。という風に断られてしまったということを大川塾の中で聞きましたから。大川先生が常々言っているのは、日本には三国一の花嫁という言葉があるのではないか。三国というのは、日本と中国とインドのことを言っているのだから、昔からアジアというのは手を携えて仲良くしていかなければならないんだと。

Shumei Okawa’s suggestion to Hideki Tojo

Mr. Okawa suggested to Prime Minister, Tojo, that the troops should withdraw from China without leaving only one solder. Prime Minister, Tojo, rejected the suggestion, saying,” We have no excuse to the soul of war-heros sleeping in the Yasukuni Shrine. This was what I heard in the Okawa school.

Mr. Okawa always said that there is a word in Japan ”the most beautiful bride in the three countries”. The three countries mean Japan, China and India. Asian countries, therefore, should be, hand in hand, friends with each other.
